Eighteen people were injured, two of them seriously, after a passenger train derailed yesterday in southern England, trapping passengers inside overturned carriages. The South East Coast Ambulance Service stated that two people sustained "serious injuries," while another 16, with "less serious injuries," were taken to hospital for treatment and care.
A large number of ambulances, firefighters, and police responded to the scene of the derailment, near Lewes, East Sussex, about 70 kilometers south of London. British Transport Police Deputy Chief Constable Ian Drummond-Smith stated: "We have declared a major incident and a significant emergency services response is underway at the scene."
