It’s that time again. I’ve gotta get myself in on the lingo. Who doesn’t know what’s happening in a convo half the time these days? Also, can we just not? I want to say no to all the situations that can literally be described with one emoticon. Enter the ghost and the zombie.

I know life is a little crazier than it was thirty years ago and somehow things are more complicated. But are they that complicated that we can’t just treat each other with a bit more respect, honesty and kindness? I don’t know if there’s ever actually an excuse to lead people on, lie, disappear without a trace, bench or orbit someone. These are real life words and they’re real life because these things are actually happening to people all the time IRL.

It’s never great being told you’re not the one, that someone has fallen out of love with you or that they’ve fallen for someone else. It sucks, actually. But at least there used to be a conversation. There was always the old “it’s not you, it’s me” if nobody could think of anything better to say. Now it seems there are so many different games being played that we need a whole dictionary to understand them. A situationship is more than a friendship but less than a properly defined relationship. A delusionship is largely happening in your own head, fuelled by hope and expectations that probably aren’t being matched by the other person. Then there’s the talking stage, where you’re not dating, you’re apparently “talking”. Talking used to be something we did with our mouths. Keep up, students.
