The wife of a sailor aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln is speaking out after her husband reportedly jumped from the aircraft carrier earlier this month. The wife, who spoke to MS NOW on the condition of anonymity, said the Navy did not contact her about the reported incident, which occurred on Aug. 3, until four days later. “I think that it was handled very poorly because they didn’t inform me and they didn’t want me to know, and they’re just trying to cover this up,” the woman told MS NOW. She said her husband spent nearly an hour in the water after jumping in before being rescued. The woman is now awaiting her husband’s return to San Diego after he undergoes a medical evaluation, according to the report. The sailor’s wife said she only learned of her husband’s “suicide attempt” after one of her husband’s friends aboard the ship messaged her that someone from his squadron went overboard, according to the report. MS NOW reportedly reviewed text messages revealing that the same friend later told her it was her husband. She was reportedly unable to contact him and reached out to the ship’s ombudsman for more information. The Navy wife’s account to MS NOW comes in the wake of multiple reports of increasingly dire conditions aboard the carrier amid the ongoing war in Iran. This includes food shortages, water quality issues, mental health issues and concerns about self-harm. The Pacific-based aircraft carrier USS George Washington is reportedly now headed to the Middle East.
