Colon’s father, Richard, announced his son’s death Thursday in a Facebook post.“Good morning my people. I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world, NOW HE IS in a better world,” Richard Colon wrote Thursday. “… Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers.”Prichard Colón fell into a 221-day coma after an Oct. 17, 2015, fight against Terrel Williams in which he took multiple blows to the back of the head. The fight went on for nine rounds despite Colón repeatedly complaining to the referee about Williams throwing illegal rabbit punches and telling the ringside doctor, Richard Ashby, he felt dizzy. He later collapsed after being disqualified because his corner removed his gloves too early.The Puerto Rican boxer had brain surgery but never fully recovered from his injuries, identified as a large subdural hematoma, and was in a persistent vegetative state. Colón’s family filed a $50 million lawsuit against Ashby and the fight’s promoters for allowing the fight to continue.Colón’s fight against Williams was his only career loss. He held a 16-0 record to that point and had never been knocked down until that night.
