The Bench Boost has traditionally been a chip that Fantasy Premier League managers save for later in the season, usually for a Double Gameweek when teams have two fixtures. But we now have two sets of chips, with one set needing to be used before the Gameweek 19 deadline. That makes an early Bench Boost much more appealing and there is a strong argument that Gameweek One or Gameweek Two could be the ideal time to use it this season. There are risks, of course but there are also several advantages that make an early Bench Boost worth serious consideration. Why use the Bench Boost early? The biggest reason is squad structure. To get the most out of a Bench Boost, you need all 15 players to have realistic chances of starting and scoring points. That usually means spending more money than normal on your bench.A standard FPL team often includes a £4.0m goalkeeper, a cheap fifth defender and perhaps a budget forward who rarely plays. That structure is efficient for most of the season, but poor for a Bench Boost. This year, there is no obvious £4.0m starting goalkeeper and at present, we have no standout £4.5m-£5.0m forward either. The longer you wait to use Bench Boost, the longer you’re potentially carrying extra money on your bench instead of investing it in your starting XI.Using the chip immediately allows you to build a deep squad from the start, take advantage of all 15 players, then gradually move that money back into your strongest XI, or deploy an early wildcard and set yourself up for the first half of the season. The Bench Boost is also the most awkward chip to plan for.Saving it until later often means either spending several transfers improving players you normally wouldn’t care about, or using the Wildcard to set up for it.You might have to upgrade your second goalkeeper, fifth defender and bench midfielder just to create a decent Bench Boost squad — then, immediately afterwards, you may want to undo those transfers to move money back into your starting XI.Using the chip early removes that problem entirely.Once the Bench Boost is gone, you can focus solely on building the strongest possible starting XI for the remainder of the first half of the season. That simplicity shouldn’t be underestimated.Breaking down the Gameweek One Bench BoostGameweek One is arguably the most interesting Bench Boost opportunity of the entire season. Before the first deadline, managers have unlimited transfers, which effectively means you can build your squad specifically for the Bench Boost without needing to use a Wildcard. You can select 15 players with good opening fixtures and make sure every bench player is expected to start. That is something you cannot replicate later in the season without using a Wildcard beforehand. In effect, Gameweek One gives you the chance to use two chips in one gameweek. That can be extremely powerful. The opening gameweek also provides several teams worth targeting.Manchester United have a very appealing fixture against Hull City (A), Arsenal host Coventry City (H), while Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Brighton & Hove Albion all have fixtures that could work well for a Bench Boost team.
