Google has introduced gen AI performance reports in Search Console, giving site owners a new way to understand their visibility in generative search features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. The change matters because a search appearance can now shape awareness, brand perception and later actions even when it does not produce an immediate site visit. For publishers and enterprise content teams, clicks remain important, but they are no longer the only useful signal.

The official Google announcement on gen AI performance reports positions the data within Search Console’s broader performance dataset. That integration makes AI-generated search results part of the same strategic measurement environment as established organic search activity, rather than a separate and invisible channel.

From click measurement to AI visibility measurement

Traditional SEO reporting has largely centered on rankings, impressions, clicks and click-through rate. Those measures still establish whether a page is surfaced and whether a user chooses to visit. Generative results add another layer: a site or brand can be referenced in an answer that satisfies the query before a click occurs.

That does not mean traffic has become irrelevant. It means teams need to distinguish between being found, being represented and driving a downstream outcome. Research and industry analysis cited in the available evidence indicate that AI Overviews can affect downstream traffic and perception even where the user does not select the cited result. A citation, mention or comparative reference may therefore have strategic value, but its value depends on how it connects to a business goal.
