The closures affect multiple regional banners, with Kroger-branded stores taking the largest hit, followed by Harris Teeter and Pick 'n Save locations. Chairman and interim CEO Ron Sargent stated the closures are intended to simplify business operations and refocus resources on high-growth areas. While store workers are being offered jobs at other locations, Kroger announced plans to eliminate nearly 1,000 corporate and administrative positions. The grocery giant still operates around 2,800 stores nationwide and is currently pursuing a $1.65 billion acquisition of the Giant Eagle chain.
