PORT OF SPAIN North/St Ann's West MP Stuart Young said yesterday some constituents have expressed concern as to the impact on residents, including at the Emperor Valley Zoo, of the Government's relocation of the Independence Day parade at the Queen's Park Savannah (QPS).Young said the shifting of the activities to a location opposite President's House also seemed to indicate the celebrations would be very scaled-down.The former prime minister was speaking at a news conference at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, in Port of Spain.Young last Sunday published a video from the QPS, in which he questioned whether the designated use of the space was being observed. He expressed concern over possible environmental impact from the installation of structures to accommodate the military parade on Independence Day. The parade is traditionally held at the North Stand.Minister in the Ministry of Housing Phillip Alexander told the Express Sunday the new venue could usher in a fresh approach to the country's national celebrations while potentially saving taxpayers millions.Young said yesterday some constituents had raised concerns of potential impact on the Emperor Valley Zoo. He noted the activities would now be closer to the residential areas of Belmont and environs, and away from the commercial areas of the Savannah and capital city.Young said it was to be seen what would be happening on Independence Day, as no details have been given by the Government.'If it does actually take place, I'll be happy if it does,' he stated.Young recalled that last Sunday, he and other colleagues were on a visit and 'much to my surprise but not shock, saw something being erected opposite the President's House, and then, very upsettingly, saw aggregates of steamrollers there as well'.Young said he immediately drew attention and asked questions.'There are questions to be answered,' he stressed.He said he was not part of the Government and 'assuming that they still speak to members of the media', it would be helpful to hear from Minister of Defence Wayne Sturge, Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.Young said he assumed there was a communications official, and that there were 'many' at the Office of the Prime Minister.Stating he has heard nothing from the officials, the MP said he was 'still awaiting to see what is taking place'.'It's clear it's not going to be the traditional event,' Young said, adding that he waited like the rest of the 'sensible' population to see if it takes place.The annual Independence Day parade was cancelled last year with the Government citing ongoing national security operations under the state of emergency and advice from security experts. The cancellation was severely criticised by the Opposition and some members of the public.
