NFL players can compete in flag football at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, but making Team USA will require more than an NFL résumé. (Image via Getty)Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow can play Olympic flag football in 2028. That does not mean any of them can simply claim a Team USA jersey.NFL owners approved player participation, but Olympic teams will have only 10 roster spots. The United States has already qualified as the host nation, while the first Olympic qualifying event began Aug. 13 at the IFAF World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany. The bigger question for NFL fans is now about who actually gets picked. How does flag football qualification for the 2028 Olympics actually work?Los Angeles will host six men's teams and six women's teams. Each roster will contain 10 athletes, meaning only 120 flag football players will compete across both tournaments. Games will be played five-on-five.There are three qualification routes. The United States receives one men's quota and one women's quota automatically because it is hosting the 2028 Olympics. The next places come from the 2026 IFAF World Championships in Düsseldorf, which run from Aug. 13-16. The top two eligible men's teams and top two eligible women's teams will earn Olympic quota places. That leaves three spots in each tournament. Before that, teams must reach the Q-Series through the 2027 IFAF Continental Championships. Two eligible men's teams and two eligible women's teams from each continent will advance to the 10-team Q-Series field. Those will be decided through the Olympic Q-Series in 2028. Two men's teams and two women's teams will earn Olympic quota places in Montreal from June 1-4. The final men's and women's quota places will be decided in Orlando, Fla., from June 8-11. Across the three Q-Series quotas in each gender, at least two continents must be represented.Teams that qualify through the 2026 World Championships cannot return through the Q-Series.Why is Team USA playing in an Olympic qualifier if it has already qualified for LA28?This is where the current World Championships can sound more confusing than they are.The United States already owns an Olympic quota because LA28 is a home Games. Team USA does not need a top-two finish in Düsseldorf to secure its place. The tournament still matters. The World Championships determine four Olympic quotas while also deciding a world title. For the U.S., it provides another major test against the teams it could face in Los Angeles.U.S. quarterback Nico Casares made the objective clear in comments reported by The Associated Press.“Win gold and leave no doubt in anyone’s mind that we’re the team that should be in the 2028 Olympics.”That distinction matters because qualifying a country is separate from selecting the players who will represent it.Can Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow simply join Team USA for the Olympics?Potentially, but none of them can simply walk onto the roster.NFL owners unanimously approved a resolution in May 2025 allowing players to try out for Olympic flag football. The league also placed limits on participation. A maximum of one player from each NFL club can compete, while a team's designated international player may represent his country separately. Each country's National Olympic Committee will select its Olympic roster based on proposals from the appropriate national federation. NFL players must go through a tryout or qualification process before Olympic competition. That means an NFL contract, Pro Bowl selection or MVP trophy does not guarantee anything.Burrow and Hurts have publicly expressed interest in Olympic flag football. Mahomes had also shown interest, but said in May 2025 that he expected to leave LA28 to younger players.IFAF President Pierre Trochet summarized the standard while discussing possible NFL participation with the AP:“Nobody is entitled to be an Olympian. Everybody will have to earn their spot.”There is already evidence behind that warning. In March, the U.S. men's national flag football team faced rosters packed with current and former NFL players at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic in Los Angeles.Team USA beat a squad featuring Burrow, Jayden Daniels and Saquon Barkley before defeating a team featuring Tom Brady and Hurts. It later beat Burrow's team again in the championship game. The event made one point difficult to ignore. Flag football rewards a different set of movements, timing and decisions. How different is Olympic flag football from an NFL game? The quarterback still throws. Receivers still run routes. Defenders still try to stop them. The structure changes almost everything around those jobs.Olympic flag football uses five players per side on a field measuring 70 yards by 25 yards, including two 10-yard end zones. Games consist of two 20-minute halves. There are no tackles. A defender ends the play by pulling one of the flags attached to the ball carrier. There is also no traditional offensive or defensive line. That removes much of the blocking, pass protection and trench play that shapes an NFL game. The down system changes too. An NFL offense normally gets four downs to gain 10 yards and earn another first down.In Olympic flag football, an offense starts near its own five-yard line and gets four downs to cross midfield. Reaching midfield gives it another four downs to score. There are no punts or field goals. After a touchdown, worth six points, teams can attempt one extra point from the five-yard line or two points from the 10-yard line. The smaller field and lack of tackling put more emphasis on quick decisions, spacing, acceleration and the ability to pull flags in space. That difference was visible at the March exhibition, which used modified Olympic-style flag football rules. Team USA handled NFL-heavy opposition despite sharing a sport built around many of the same basic skills.Could an NFL superstar lose an Olympic roster spot to a full-time flag football player?Absolutely. The Olympic roster has only 10 places. Team USA already has players who compete internationally under flag football rules and have spent years learning the sport's spacing and timing.Casares addressed the NFL competition directly while speaking with the AP.“Everyone wants our spot in the United States and obviously there’s a lot of talk about different people getting involved.”NFL players bring elite arm talent, speed, route-running ability and coverage experience. Flag specialists bring years of experience within the exact format that will be played at LA28.Selection will force USA Football to decide which combination gives the country its strongest 10-player roster. The NFL's own participation rules create another layer. Since only one player per NFL club can participate, teammates could theoretically compete for the same available club slot depending on the final selection process. What will the Olympic flag football tournament look like once LA28 begins?Flag football will make its Olympic debut during the first week of the Los Angeles Games.Competition runs from July 15-22, 2028. The men's and women's preliminary rounds will take place across the opening five days.Four of the six teams in each tournament advance to the semifinals. The men's medal games are scheduled for July 21, followed by the women's medal games on July 22.That creates a small margin for error. With only six teams per gender and four advancing, qualification itself may prove harder than surviving the preliminary stage for some countries. The United States has already cleared the first obstacle.Who wears the jerseys remains unsettled. And for NFL stars thinking about Los Angeles, that may become the most interesting competition of all.
