Andy Burnham has been warned that houses in multiple occupations (HMOs) will bear the brunt of his plan to house more asylum seekers in middle-class areas.
The Prime Minister has said he wants to end the current system which sees the “poorest communities” housing more than their fair share of new arrivals.
So-called “red wall” Labour MPs in the north of England are delighted by Burnham’s push for a more even distribution – arguing that they have been carrying too much of the “burden”.
However, Burnham has been told that local authorities in middle-class areas in the south of England will try to use planning controls to thwart use of HMOs for asylum housing.
