Porsche is reportedly preparing to phase out production of its flagship Taycan electric sports car by 2030, marking a major setback for the German automaker’s once-aggressive electrification strategy.Germany’s WirtschaftsWoche reported Thursday that Porsche management and its works council have agreed in principle to end Taycan production by 2030, citing company sources. Porsche did not confirm the report, instead referring to comments from CEO Michael Leiters in July that there were no immediate plans to discontinue the model.The Taycan, launched in 2019 as Porsche’s first fully electric production car, was intended to demonstrate that high-performance luxury sports cars could successfully transition to battery power. Instead, demand has deteriorated sharply.Porsche delivered 40,629 Taycans in 2023, but sales fell nearly half to 20,836 in 2024 and declined another 22% to 16,339 in 2025.The weakness has continued into 2026, with Porsche reporting a 16% decline in first-half deliveries to 122,306 vehicles. China, one of Porsche’s most important markets, suffered a particularly severe 32% drop.The Taycan is now one of only two fully electric Porsche model lines, alongside the Macan EV. The latter has performed considerably better, accounting for more than half of the Macan’s 84,328 global deliveries in 2025.Porsche’s broader problems extend beyond the Taycan. The company’s operating performance has deteriorated sharply, while its restructuring includes plans to eliminate around 9,000 jobs by 2035.
