Fisheries Minister A. Srinath on Thursday said that the State government would take up with the Centre the issue of the continued arrest of Rameswaram fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.Addressing the media in Thoothukudi, he said, “We have taken several measures for the welfare of fishermen and have discussed them with the Chief Minister. The Finance Minister is also extending good support.”Responding to a query on the continued arrest of Rameswaram fishermen, he said, “After discussing this with the Chief Minister, we will visit New Delhi next week and hold talks with the Union Minister for External Affairs and Union Minister for Fisheries on the issue. We will certainly find a good solution.”Responding to the demand of Thoothukudi mechanised boat fishermen for deep-sea fishing, he said the government was considering the proposal and details would be known when the Fisheries Department’s demand for grants was taken up in the Assembly.Later in the day, the Minister distributed welfare assistance worth ₹10.12 lakh to 11 fishermen families and ₹9.45 lakh worth of outboard motors to 17 country boat fishermen.Joint Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department Ilamvazhuthi, Assistant Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department Bushra Shabnam and other officials were present.
