At least 19 workers were trapped after water and debris entered an under-construction tunnel at Mayapur near Pipalkoti in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, PTI reported on Thursday, citing officials, while rescue operations were underway.According to PTI, the workers were trapped inside the tunnel following the incident. Rescue teams were deployed to evacuate those stranded.The Chamoli district administration was put on alert after reports of water and debris entering the under-construction THDC tunnel, ANI reported.District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar reached the site soon after receiving information about the incident and was monitoring the relief and rescue operations.So far, 16 people trapped inside the tunnel have been safely rescued, while efforts were continuing to evacuate the remaining workers.Teams from the district administration, police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Army and other agencies were at the site, ANI said.A full-scale rescue operation was underway to reach the workers still inside the tunnel and bring them out safely.The incident comes as authorities step up efforts at the site to ensure the safe evacuation of all workers trapped following the entry of water and debris into the under-construction tunnel.
