A parent has asked for advice after their sister announced the name of her future daughter, leaving them thoroughly confused. People on social media all agreed she should speak up before it's too late16:00, 13 Aug 2026A parent has asked for advice after their pregnant sister announced what her unborn daughter will be called - and that she will be known by the same nickname as their own child. When you're expecting a baby, one of the biggest decisions you'll make is what you want to name your child.‌Some might opt for more unique and out-there names, while others choose more traditional monikers. But now, one parent has asked for advice after their sister announced she was intending on using the same shortened version of her future daughter's name that her niece already goes by.‌"My daughter is four and named Elodie," the parent explained in a Reddit post. "We chose it partly because we liked Ellie as a nickname, and almost everyone in the family has called her Ellie since she was a baby. She introduces herself that way at preschool too."‌They went on to say that their younger sister is now pregnant with her first child, and recently revealed that the baby's name will be Eloise, with Ellie as the everyday nickname. "She knows what our daughter is called, obviously, but said cousins having similar names is cute and that nobody owns a nickname," the parent said, explaining that their own parents had agreed to the statement, and jokingly started to call the two cousins 'big Ellie' and 'little Ellie'They went on to say they hadn't said anything at the time as they didn't want to turn their sister's announcement into an argument, but later turned to their husband to say they found it strange. Their husband replied that he thought they should mention it before the baby is born.‌While they don't want to ask the sister to pick a different name, the husband said the sister might not have consider 'how confusing' it would be to have two girls named Ellie at every future family gathering. "I also know that raising it could make me look possessive about a name," the parent said. "Elodie and Eloise are separate full names, and the girls will have their own lives."Most people quickly agreed and said the couple should talk to the sister about the possible confusion about the two girls sharing a nickname, with one person writing: "I would mention the practical issue once, without presenting it as a veto. Something like, 'Just checking that you really want two Ellies at every family event, because ours already answers to it.'""She may have considered that and still love Eloise, which is her choice," they added.‌Another user wrote: "She already knows they're both going to have the same nickname doesn't she? So I suppose you could gently say 'I feel really weird about it but if you love the name obviously I don't expect you to change it'. I think that's all you can do tbh. Personally I find it extremely weird that your sister would do that and don't understand other comments saying you're overthinking it/ being weird!!!""While they are two different names, you all call your daughter Ellie already, so it's weird for her to want to use Ellie as well," someone else added. "If she planned on calling Eloise 'Lou' or 'Lulu' I'd feel differently,"Others went on to say they were more annoyed about the idea of 'big Ellie' and 'little Ellie', with one user writing: "Your daughter should not suddenly have her established name modified to make the new choice work."Article continues belowAnother shared: "They tried calling me 'Big Sharon' and as a fat girl who was also about eight inches taller than 'little Sharon' I did not appreciate the nickname. They said it was all age but come ON."A different user said: "Do not accept 'big Ellie' for your daughter unless she likes it. The adults created this overlap, so they shouldn't solve it by renaming the older child."Someone else agreed and wrote: "I fully understand being upset about your niece sharing a nickname with your daughter, but ultimately there’s nothing you can do about it. However 'Big Ellie' would absolutely not fly. They don’t get to rename your existing child."
