The logistics company will operate the new Scania 4×2 45S high-roof tractor units from its multi-user distribution centre in Wakefield, initially serving retail and fast-moving consumer goods customers on local and regional routes. The trucks are the first battery-electric HGVs to become a permanent part of the Menzies Distribution Solutions (MDS) fleet following previous trials.
Each truck combines Scania’s S-series sleeper cab with a 450 kW electric powertrain. MDS will initially use the vehicles primarily for packaging and other relatively lightweight loads, with each truck expected to cover around 250 miles (402 kilometres) per shift.
To charge the trucks between shifts, MDS has invested in on-site infrastructure offering 1 MW charging capability and plans to charge the trucks twice during each 24-hour operating cycle. Voltempo, which leads the eFREIGHT 2030 project and serves as its charging infrastructure partner, supported MDS with the technical requirements, grid connection and engagement with the local distribution network operator.
“The new trucks will initially support local and regional deliveries from Wakefield, but over time we plan to move them between operations, assess a range of use cases and understand how far we can push the technology in live operations,” said Adam Purshall, Fleet, Program and Systems Director at MDS.
