The 2027 Supercopa de Espana will take place in Istanbul after being moved from Saudi Arabia.The Athletic reported in January the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) was considering moving the tournament away from Saudi Arabia for the 2027 edition due to the Gulf nation hosting next year’s Asian Cup.The RFEF said in a statement on Thursday that the competition will be staged at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, the 77,000-capacity home of the Turkish national team. It will take place between February 2 and 7.The Spanish federation added that the Supercopa would return to Saudi in 2028 and confirmed that the scheduling clash with the 2027 Asian Cup, which runs from January 7 to February 5, was the reason for the change in venue.The RFEF said Istanbul was chosen “after a period of work and negotiations in which up to seven bids from locations around the world were analysed”.Saudi Arabia has a contract to host the event until 2029, with six of the last seven Supercopa finals taking place in the gulf state. The 2021 tournament was held in Spain because of the travel restrictions in place due to the Covid pandemic. The 2027 edition will be the first one to be held in Turkey.The Supercopa is a four-team mini tournament, consisting of the La Liga winners and runners up — Barcelona and Real Madrid — and Copa del Rey winners and runners up, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid. Before it moved to Saudi in 2020, it had been a two-legged match between the winners of La Liga and the Copa del Rey and was played at the beginning of the season.The RFEF’s contract to stage the Supercopa in Saudi Arabia is worth, depending on the participating clubs, €51million ($59.6m) per year. However, it has also attracted criticism.Before the 2025-26 tournament, Athletic Club’s Inaki Williams said the arrangement was “s***” for players and fans.Saudi’s human rights record has been questioned and, last year, Spanish football’s main supporters’ association warned of the “risk for female fans” after partners of Mallorca players alleged they were “harassed” during a Supercopa tie in Jeddah, Saudi’s second city.
