Two opposition US senators are questioning an Antwerp diamond association about an extravagant ring that was presented to President Donald Trump weeks before he announced a tariff exemption for diamonds.
Was it pay to play when the Trump administration announced that some sectors, including diamonds, would be exempt from the 10% tariffs the US would impose on all EU imports?
That is what Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal, two Democrat senators, suspect. In a letter to an umbrella organisation for local diamond traders, Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), the two ask if the Belgian company was “buying special favors from President Trump with lavish gifts”, when they gave him a diamond ring on 29 June.
“This ring confirms that foreign companies can buy their exemption from import duties by simply showering Trump with conspicuous gifts,” Warren stated in a press release.
