If you've spent time in Nigerian dev communities lately - Twitter/X threads, WhatsApp groups, local meetup Slacks - you've probably noticed the conversation shifting. It's less "is there work in tech here" and more "which kind of work, and for whom". That shift says a lot about where the sector actually stands right now.
Lagos Is Still the Center of Gravity - But Not the Only One
Lagos remains the obvious hub: most fintech HQs, most accelerators, most in-person meetups. But Abuja and a few other cities are quietly building their own tech pockets, particularly in fintech-adjacent services, edtech, and IT infrastructure roles tied to banks and telecoms.
What's changed is that "tech job" no longer defaults to "startup job". Established sectors - banking, healthcare, retail, education are hiring engineers, data analysts, and IT support staff to run their own digital transformation projects. That's a real shift from a few years ago, when most serious engineering roles were concentrated in a handful of well-known startups.
