Facebook parent Meta Platforms is facing off against a range of US state agencies in California federal court beginning this week, in the most extensive case yet to come to trial over social media addiction.
The trial, which began with jury selection in Oakland federal court on Wednesday, is expected to last seven weeks.
The allegations include those from the attorneys general of Colorado, Kentucky, California and New Jersey that Meta designed products such as Facebook and Instagram to keep young users addicted, and misled consumers over safety.

The trial is also addressing claims by 29 states that Meta illegally collected and used children’s data in violation of federal law.
