BEREA, Ohio — With two full weeks of Cleveland Browns training camp now complete, the unsettled quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders continues to drive the most conversation. It even produces an occasional touchdown.First-year Browns head coach Todd Monken did announce to the team following Wednesday’s practice that Watson will start the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears on Saturday. Sanders will then get his chance to start the second preseason game on Aug. 22 against the Buffalo Bills. But while Monken continues to evaluate — at least on some level — when it comes to the game’s most important position, the rest of the offensive depth chart has taken shape.Unsurprisingly, rookie first-round pick Spencer Fano has taken over as the starting left tackle. Convincingly and quickly, rookie wide receivers KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston have played their way into first-team roles. And the remade offensive line is pretty much down to one decision, with holdover Teven Jenkins the current leader at right guard over KT Leveston, who started seven games at tackle last season. There’s much to be settled in the second wave of the wide receiver rotation. Same at tight end, where Harold Fannin Jr. is a rising star and no one behind him has emerged. Elgton Jenkins is slated to be the starting center assuming he’s healthy. And though he’s missed a number of practices, the belief is the team is being cautious given that Elgton Jenkins’ 2025 season ended due to a broken leg.Shedeur Sanders shares perspective on training campZac JacksonLeveston’s transition to guard seems to be going well, but Teven Jenkins is taking the majority of the starter’s reps now that he’s back from an injury-related absence of more than a week. And now that Fano has semi-officially beaten out Dawand Jones for the left tackle job, Jones has played right tackle with the No. 2 offense over the last two practices. That’s left third-round rookie Austin Barber at left tackle, Barber’s college position.Rookie center Parker Brailsford remains out due to a hand injury. So when veteran Elgton Jenkins is being rested — as was the case Wednesday — Luke Wypler and Kingsley Eguakun split the starter’s reps at center.Right now, signs point to both Jones and Barber making the team, and players like Wypler and holdover guard Zak Zinter — who’s also missed several days due to injury — potentially being on the wrong side of things. The Browns initially tinkered with the idea of giving Barber some right guard reps this summer, but he’s been needed at tackle to this point. Expect Monken to play Barber at both left and right tackle over the team’s first two preseason games.Players getting heavy volumeBoston has been arguably the most impressive offensive player of both spring practices and the first three segments of training camp. But the quarterback battle has provided lots of opportunity for pass catchers to make plays, and several have delivered.Running back Dylan Sampson was heavily involved in the pass game in the just-completed week of camp. Quinshon Judkins is the clear lead back, but Sampson seems set for a pass-game role. The Browns probably won’t play Judkins or Sampson much past the first quarter of Saturday’s preseason opener, leaving the bulk of the run-game work to Rocket Sanders and Ahmani Marshall.Wide receiver Cedric Tillman seems to be on the wrong side of the roster bubble at this still-early stage, but he also was busy collecting targets and receptions earlier this week. On Wednesday, Tillman was not practicing due to an undisclosed injury. If he doesn’t play Saturday, look for Gage Larvadain, Luke Floriea and Malachi Corley to all potentially move up a spot in the current wide receiver rotation.Right now, Larvadain is behind veteran Tylan Wallace in the rotation, and both are behind second-year speedster Isaiah Bond, who’s made several big plays in recent days after having a quiet start to camp. The highlight of Wednesday’s practice — and arguably the best combination of throw and catch all summer — came on a Shedeur Sanders bomb that Bond extended to grab along the sideline in a late-practice one-minute drill. Bond is currently fourth behind the rookies and Jerry Jeudy, but if Cleveland develops any kind of consistent vertical passing game once the quarterback situation is settled, it certainly seems like Bond will be a part of that.Floriea probably won’t be one of the 53 players the Browns keep on their initial roster, but he’s been a productive training camp player for the second straight summer and likely will be on the practice squad in case he’s needed at some point. Floriea has gotten a handful of reps with the No. 1 offense the last two weeks, and on Tuesday he caught a deep touchdown pass from Dillon Gabriel in a full-speed, full-team session. The team believes Concepcion will be the primary punt returner in the regular season, but Larvadain and Floriea will each get preseason opportunities in the punt return game.Second-year receiver Isaiah Bond has made a handful of big plays in recent training camp practices. (Nick Cammett / Getty Images)Any man standingAfter an injury emergency at defensive tackle developed early in camp, the Browns have been hit hard by cornerback injuries. A day after July acquisition Damarri Mathis suffered a season-ending injury, Tyron Herring left the practice field early Wednesday. Herring had an interception Tuesday while playing with the starters.Veterans D’Angelo Ross and Myles Bryant, both of whom are competing for roster spots as backup cornerbacks and special teams players, have missed multiple days due to injury. Three undrafted rookie cornerbacks — Nate Evans, Jeadyn Lukus and Michael Coats Jr. — are expected to see extended action in the preseason opener. The situation at defensive tackle has only slightly improved as Mike Hall Jr. and Kalia Davis have both missed multiple weeks of practice, and starter Maliek Collins remains on the physically unable to perform list. Collins is working out each day as he rehabs the quad injury that ended his outstanding 2025 season early and aims to return for the start of the regular season. The Browns continue to look for help at defensive end, too, as they worked out some edge rushers Wednesday, including former Baltimore Raven Tyus Bowser and Genard Avery, a Browns draft pick in 2018. Cleveland is set with starting defensive ends Jared Verse and Alex Wright, with Isaiah McGuire as the third defensive end in his contract year, but the search for more depth continues. The Browns tried to sign A.J. Epenesa in March before an agreed-upon deal fell apart, then the team publicly pursued Jadeveon Clowney during the first week of training camp before he chose to sign a one-year deal with Houston. The player to watch in the pass-rush group in Saturday’s preseason opener is probably undrafted rookie Khordae Sydnor.Credit where it’s dueOver the first week of camp, the obvious standout players were all front-line regulars: Verse, Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward, defensive tackle Mason Graham, Judkins and Boston were in that group. Over the last several sessions, Bond, McGuire and rookie safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren have all made notable plays on multiple days.Though the first preseason game is generally for younger players and provides a stage for them to continue to make an impression, that might be different for this year’s Browns with so much new on the offensive side.Monken said his plan for Saturday’s preseason opener is for all healthy players to participate, though it’s hard to believe players like Ward and Verse will play much at all.
