A German campaign group has filed a criminal complaint against Facebook parent Meta Platforms, eyewear maker EssilorLuxottica, and several retailers, arguing Meta’s smart glasses violate the country’s privacy laws.
HateAid said the devices, and the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer in particular, broke Germany’s Telecommunications, Digital Services and Data Protection Act that outlaws devices designed to film people covertly.
“Smart glasses now allow a particularly inconspicuous surveillance technology to be disguised as an everyday object,” said the group in a statement.
