The Home Affairs corruption investigation remains ongoing, with Minister Leon Schreiber saying the department cannot confirm the total number of fraudulent visas, permits and identity documents identified.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber says 65 officials have been dismissed and 16 suspended since July 2024, while nine others have been convicted for contravening departmental regulations amid an ongoing Special Investigating Unit (SIU) investigation into alleged corruption at the department.

Schreiber revealed the figures in a parliamentary reply to uMkhonto weSizwe Party Member of Parliament (MP) Mariam Muhammad, who asked about reports of systemic corruption involving the alleged sale of visas, permits and citizenship documentation.

Muhammad also asked what safeguards had been implemented to prevent the National Population Register (NPR) from being compromised by organised syndicates.

Schreiber said the department could not confirm the total number of fraudulent visas, permits and identity-related documents identified since July 2024 because the SIU investigation remained ongoing.
