North Korea fired a ballistic missile with a range of more than 700 kilometers from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea on Wednesday.Analysts say the launch carries political significance as a show of force before South Korea and the US begin their Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercise on Monday. In addition, it likely represents the North Korean military’s efforts to improve its missile forces’ combat performance.South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Wednesday that they had detected one ballistic missile launched from the Wonsan area of North Korea toward the East Sea around 6 am.“The missile flew more than 700 kilometers, and the South Korean and US authorities are conducting a detailed analysis of its specifications,” the Joint Chiefs said.North Korea has regularly denounced Ulchi Freedom Shield, which is held twice a year in March and August, as a war game predicated on an invasion of the North in statements by officials and reports in state media.During the administration of previous President Yoon Suk-yeol, North Korea responded to the exercise with missile launches and military drills.Hong Min, a senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification, noted that “the missile was launched before North Korea has issued any statement criticizing the South Korea-US joint exercise.”“This could potentially be followed during the South Korea-US exercise by a statement from North Korea’s Defense Ministry, a statement from [Kim Jong-un’s sister] Kim Yo-jong or additional missile launches,” Hong said.Given the distance traveled, the missile is within range of the Japanese port of Sasebo, the location of a key US naval base.Analysts say that ahead of the South Korea-US joint exercise, held to prepare for the contingency of full-scale war on the Korean Peninsula, Pyongyang was sending a warning by launching a missile capable of hitting a US military hub in Japan that would serve as a conduit for reinforcements in a crisis on the Korean Peninsula.North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile from the same area on Aug. 6.“Rather than viewing this missile launch simply as a show of force, its technical and operational objectives also need to be considered,” suggested Yu Ji-hoon, a research fellow with the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses.Yu said that North Korea has established a cycle of missile development and production, test launches, collection of real-world data from combat use in Russia, and subsequent performance improvements.Although the Joint Chiefs said Wednesday that the missile had flown more than 700 kilometers, they didn’t explicitly identify it as a “short-range ballistic missile.”The South Korean military classifies missiles with ranges of less than 1,000 kilometers as short-range ballistic missiles.That has prompted speculation that the missile launched Wednesday may have been a type North Korea has not previously launched or a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM, range of 1,000-3,000 kilometers) on a shortened trajectory.Such possibilities are reportedly being considered in the South Korean military’s ongoing analysis of the missile’s specifications.Following the launch, the Blue House National Security Office convened an emergency meeting to review the security situation.
