Australia’s government has expanded the scope of a law intended to use funds from large tech companies to support local news media outlets, in a revised law introduced to parliament on Thursday.

Under the bill, digital platforms that make more than A$250 million (£131m) in annual digital advertising revenue from search or social media in Australia will be charged 2.5 percent of those revenues, with the funds going to support news media.

But companies can reduce or cancel out the charges by entering into content-payment deals with Australian news publishers to cary their content, the government said.
