The Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, said yesterday it has commenced a forensic investigation into the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Lotus Bank and Hackerbella Ltd over alleged violations of data protection laws.

Babatunde Bamigboye, Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations at the commission, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

Efforts to get reaction of the Head of Communication Unit, UNILAG, Alhaja Ajoke Ibrahim Alaga, proved abortive as she requested that a text message be sent, which was done.

However, hours after, there was no response to the message and subsequent calls to her line were not picked at press time.

Lotus Bank and Hackerbella Limited could not also be reached at press time last night. However, NPDC spokesman said the investigation followed public complaints alleging that students’ personal data were used to open bank accounts without lawful basis.
