Away from political debate, companies are busy growing with alternatives to the US

As Europe debates how to reduce its dependence on American tech, a number of companies are fuelling digital sovereignty by building alternatives and growing quickly in the process.

But despite the momentum, the continent has dug itself into such a deep hole of tech dependency over the past decades that private efforts are unlikely to bring digital autonomy any time soon.

“If we keep growing like we’re growing, we’ll need a hundred years until we’ve caught up to Microsoft,” lamented one company leader in conversation with Euractiv, referring to Europe’s entire tech sector.

The bloc’s dependence on overseas IT giants has long been controversial.
