German development agency the Deutsche Gesellschaft Für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) will provide technical assistance to the City of Cape Town to advance its energy strategy under the bilateral South Africa-Germany Energy Programme (SAGEN 5).

The programme is aligned with the city’s Energy Strategy, as it is structured to support South Africa’s energy transition through collaboration for a reliable, affordable and clean energy system, the City of Cape Town says.

The city's Energy Directorate and other departments will have access to the technical assistance from the GIZ on an ad hoc basis.

The SAGEN 5 programme is a three-year, flexible programme, which can be accessed for city needs at any time during the programme’s lifespan, it adds.

“This latest technical assistance under the SAGEN 5 programme is designed to support reform and modernisation efforts within the broader electricity sector,” says Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Energy Alderman Xanthea Limberg.
