Agricultural scientists of KVKs across T.N., Puducherry study carbon credit models at ‘green sites’ in Tiruppur

Agricultural scientists on a field visit to a green site developed under Vanathukkul Tiruppur initiative on Wednesday.

A delegation of agricultural scientists representing KVKs (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday (August 12) studied the carbon credit models at the ‘green sites’ developed under Vanathukkul Tiruppur agroforestry initiative by Vetry environmental organisation.The 35 participating scientists taking part in the two-day capacity-building programme on Carbon Farming encompassed experts from key domains, such as soil science, agronomy, and horticulture.The programme organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research - Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ICAR-ATARI) Zone X, Hyderabad; Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) Directorate of Extension Education; and the university’s Forest College and Research Institute (FC&RI), Mettupalayam, envisaged brainstorming sessions on analysing soil-moisture retention, crop combinations, biomass generation, and pest resilience.The main interaction took place at Glenmorgan Farm in Chengapalli, Natraj Muthusamy, CEO of VETRY NGO, said.Farm owners Kumarasamy and Soundarya Vadivel, showcased the agroforestry interventions. The scientists were shown teak farm developed with precision farming technique developed by the FC&RI for maximum volume growth.Dedicated trial plots nurtured by the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB) enabled evaluation of the field adaptation of Punnai (Calophyllum inophyllum) and newly developed, elite Neem varieties.The scientists learnt about the project undertaken by the Vetri organisation for planning 25 lakh trees over 11 years, involving local communities in rural parts of Tiruppur district with the promise of economic uplift and financial security through initiation into silvopasture models, combining timber growth with livestock grazing.The scientists explored practical frameworks for integrating scattered agroforestry plots into international carbon credit markets, and appreciated the high survival rates, and robust data tracking.
