The Texas A&M Aggies found success last year in ways that the program hadn't seen in decades, including capping off a historic season with a first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoffs. That season has passed now, and head coach Mike Elko was tasked with revamping his roster ahead of 2026, including reloading a defense that lost multiple significant contributors last season. After attacking the transfer portal and developing players on the roster, the Aggies believe they have accomplished that goal. The defensive line, which features a host of new faces ahead of the season, is still in competition mode during fall camp for the Aggies, and defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill spoke on the impact it is having on setting the tone before the season begins. How the Defensive Line Room is Frocing Top-Level CompetitionTexas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Elko reacts during the first quarter during the first round of the CFP National Playoff against the Miami Hurricanes at Kyle Field. | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectThe Aggies had the best sack percentage in all of college football last season, led by a defensive front that was disruptive in every facet of the game. Replacing that, for Hemphill, who is in year one as the Aggies defensive coordinator, wouldn't be easy, but having a long-time veteran of the program, DJ Hicks, would make it easier. "DJ (Hicks), I think last year he had a really good season. He's had a really good fall camp so far; he's gotta be one of the better defensive tackles I've ever seen, ya know," Hemphill said. "He's twitchy, fast, strong, all that stuff."Hicks isn't the only name that the Aggies are bringing in for the 2026 season, including multiple transfers such as CJ Mims, Angelo McCullom, T.J. Searcy, Ryan Henderson, and Brandon Davis-Swain. Each of those comes into College Station expecting to battle for reps, which in turn is pushing the entire grouping."We've got some good competition, and we have some really good depth," Hemphill was saying of the defensive front and how transfer players have impacted the room. "Everyone we took from the transfer portal ended up being what we hoped they would be, they are good players who can play in this league, so I think we are in a pretty good situation."With revamping the unit, there was no set rotation entering fall camp for the Aggies, and while there is still time for the depth chart to work its self out, the depth of the room has already been proven, and as iron sharpens iron, the defensive front could continue taking leaps back to what it was last season.Sign up to our free newsletter and follow us on Facebook, X and Instagram for the latest news.Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow
