The LA Clippers understandably await the resolution of the Kawhi Leonard saga. According to the latest reports, Leonard still expects to be playing for the Toronto Raptors next season. We can still assume that the trade will go through at some point this offseason. What the Clippers organization will receive as a punishment, however, remains to be seen. This uncertainty isn't stopping the Clippers from trying to build their roster for next season. Assuming the Leonard trade is finalized, LA doesn't have an open roster spot. However, they are still active in free agency with the hopes of upgrading the roster. Clippers Are Not Done Wheeling and Dealing in Free AgencyNBA insider Marc Stein reported this week that Bradley Beal is still a candidate to return to the Clippers for another season. The veteran shooting guard turned down his $5.6 million player option for next season. The Miami Heat have long been a suitor for Beal, but nothing has materialized on that front. Per Stein, the Heat and the Clippers remain interested in the 33-year-old. As disappointing as Beal's Clippers tenure has been, it's not a bad idea to bring him back. If he is going to come back at a salary similar to his player option, that has a chance to be a tradeable, team-friendly deal. If he can stay healthy until the trade deadline, he can help the Clippers with his shooting, scoring, and playmaking and boost his trade value. Beal isn't the only free agent the Clippers are keeping tabs on. They haven't given up on re-signing Bennedict Mathurin, either. They haven't committed to the restricted free agent just yet and are open to a sign-and-trade involving the 24-year-old shooting guard. For the right price, however, Mathurin could be a worthy flier on a short-term deal. At the top of the list for the Clippers, however, is Peyton Watson. The versatile forward is in the middle of a stalemate with the Denver Nuggets. They are unwilling to pay him what he deserves in free agency because they are so deep into the luxury tax and the second apron. This presents an opportunity for the Clippers, who have been competing with the Bucks and the Cavs for Watson's services. Since Watson has multiple suitors and the Nuggets have matching rights, the Clippers have to make a strong offer to both Watson and Denver to make that happen. This will require at least a first-round pick and the use of the Clippers' $17 million trade exception from the John Collins trade. The Clippers simply don't have the roster space to sign all three of Mathurin, Beal, and Watson. We can think of Mathurin and Beal as backup plans if they can't acquire Watson. There are other names on the market like Jonathan Kuminga, Ben Simmons, Kevin Love, and DeMar DeRozan, but there hasn't been any reporting connecting the Clippers to any of these players in a long time. It's a good sign that the front office is keeping its options open. We can expect either Mathurin or Beal to return to LA if the Clippers lose the Peyton Watson sweepstakes, suggesting that there will be more changes to the Clippers' roster between now and the start of the season.
