A three-day training programme on ‘Principles of Nursery Management in Vegetables’ is currently under way in Dindigul. The programme under the Indo–Israel Agricultural Project is jointly organised by the Department of Horticulture, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Embassy of Israel.Uri Rubinstein, Agriculture Attaché, MASHAV, Embassy of Israel, said the Centre of Excellence, Reddiyarchatram, was established in 2013 with the main objective of promoting innovations in horticulture through technologies provided by Israel and imparting direct training to thousands of farmers in the region.He highlighted that modern technologies would create several new opportunities for the advancement of horticultural crops and enable farmers to obtain higher yields through the adoption of modern agricultural practices.Dindigul Collector Durgamoorthi appreciated the modern horticultural initiatives being implemented through Indo–Israel cooperation. She emphasised the importance of protected cultivation, quality planting material and précised irrigation and advised farmers to adopt modern technologies to enhance productivity and income.She said the Centre of Excellence for vegetables would continue to function as an important platform for farmer training and dissemination of modern technologies. Improved vegetable seeds and planting materials are being produced and supplied to farmers in a quality manner through the Centre.Farmers can avail financial assistance for raising their own planting materials. By adopting modern cultivation practices, farmers can achieve higher yields and produce export-quality vegetables. To promote horticulture at the global level, quality planting materials of vegetables and other horticultural crops are being produced at the Centre, she said.Israeli Vegetable Expert Daniel Hadad said field demonstrations are being effectively carried out using precision farming technologies, fertigation and automated micro-irrigation management systems.Vegetable cultivation experts from Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Haryana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and West Bengal and Horticulture Department officials from across Tamil Nadu are participating in the training programme.
