Affordable alternatives to Barcelona are easier to find than ever in 2026, and these 10 cities deliver similar beaches, food and architecture for a fraction of the cost
Barcelona spent much of 2026 doubling down on limiting tourism rather than managing it. City hall raised the municipal hotel tax to between $10 and $17 a night. It added a nightly charge of roughly $14 to short-term vacation rentals. Officials also moved to nearly triple the tax on cruise passengers who spend less than half a day in the city. The goal, officials have said outright, is not to spread visitors more evenly across the calendar. The goal is to reduce their number. A plan is already underway to phase out short-term rental permits entirely by 2028. None of this makes Barcelona a bad place to visit. It makes it a more expensive and more restricted one, at a moment when travelers have more workable alternatives to Barcelona than at almost any point in recent memory.
That is the case for looking elsewhere. The cities on this list were chosen because they share real ingredients with Barcelona, not because they happen to be cheap. Each one offers some combination of beaches within walking distance of a real city center and architecture worth a detour. Each also has a food and nightlife culture that runs late into the night. Some are Spanish and require no adjustment in language, food or daily rhythm. Others sit in Portugal, Italy, Greece, Croatia and Albania. There, currency and cost of living alone can cut a travel budget by a third or more. None of that requires giving up the coastal, walkable experience that draws people to Barcelona in the first place.
