When Big Brother introduced “The Gambit” in the first week of Season 11, it gave viewers a rather unusual choice. One male and one female housemate would be guaranteed a place until the finale, but permanently barred from winning the ₦160 million grand prize. On paper, it was a strategic decision. Viewers could identify potential threats, protect housemates they felt were valuable to the show, or simply keep certain people around while taking away their shot at the money.
But what happened with the votes revealed something we already know too well: sometimes, Nigerians vote with their feelings first. Flora became the female Gambit with 29% of the votes, while Aikou took the male slot with 9%. And the two choices were interesting for different reasons.
Flora’s selection was driven largely by her appeal as a housemate. Viewers had already seen her boldness, energy and potential to bring drama, so for many, the thinking was simply: “She’ll make the show interesting, let’s keep her around.” Some may not have fully considered what making her a Gambit actually meant. As a Gambit, Flora was guaranteed a place until the finale but could no longer win the ₦160 million grand prize. So, in the end, the vote was less about making her the winner and more about wanting her to stay.
