Michigan football is entering its second week of fall camp and position battles are still being watched. The Wolverines' offense might have a few more close battles than the defense, but that doesn't mean Michigan's defense is set in stone. After a week of fall camp and hearing coaches and players speak, here is what Michigan's starting defensive lineup would look like entering Week 1 against Western Michigan. Defensive lineStarters: John Henry Daley, Enow Etta, Trey Pierce, Cameron BrandtIn the mix: Dominic Nichols, Lugard Edokpayi, Carter Meadows, Nate MarshallUSA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectEntering fall camp, we knew John Henry Daley was getting close to being fully healthy. And Kyle Whittingham confirmed that recently, saying he is a full go but remains on a pitch count to slowly ramp him up. The former All-American is certainly a starter and Whittingham confirmed that both Enow Etta and Trey Pierce are the starters inside, with Jonah Lea'ea being the first off the bench. What gets interesting is the starting edge alongside Daley. Presumably it's Cameron Brandt, but coaches haven't been shy talking up Dominic Nichols, Lugard Edokpayi, and Carter Meadows. Brandt will likely start, but expect the Wolverines to rotate plenty to keep bodies fresh. LinebackersStarters: Troy Bowles and Chase TaylorIn the mix: Nathaniel Staehling and Nathaniel Owusu-BoatengUSA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectThis is the one position that's still up for grabs. Troy Bowles returns and he's the leader of the clubhouse, although he didn't play a ton of football last season for Michigan. However, Bowles has been described as a leader and he should be one of the starters. In Jay Hill's 4-2-5 defense, the Wolverines will only play two linebackers at times, with a third coming in for certain packages. Both Nathaniel Staehling and Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng could make things interesting, but the way coaches talk about Chase Taylor, it makes you think he's in line to start. He's been tabbed as a breakout candidate and a rising star. Owusu-Boateng has the highest ceiling of them all, but he has to show he can stay healthy and pick everything up. CornerbacksStarters: Jyaire Hill, Zeke Berry, Smith Snowden (Nickel)USA TODAY Network via Reuters ConnectNo surprises here, it's the backups that might be of concern. Michigan could have one of the best starting cornerback rooms in the Big Ten this season, led by All-Big Ten players Jyaire Hill and Zeke Berry. Smith Snowden was an All-Big 12 player last season at Utah. Snowden figures to play slot, although Berry could as well. Hill will attempt to lock down the opposition's top playmaker this fall. Shamari Earls is the name emerging and standing out in fall camp behind those three. He should slot in as CB4 this season. SafetiesStarters: Rod Moore and Chris BracyIMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectThe only real question here was if Rod Moore was going to be able to play. But on the same note as John Henry Daley, Moore is a full go, but the coaching staff is keeping him on a pitch count and will slowly ramp him up. Bracy comes from Memphis, where he is stout against the run, a solid tackler, and can roam around. Both Mason Curtis and Jordan Young will be able to come in and spell Moore and Bracy this season. If Moore picks up where he left off from the 2023 season, the Wolverines could also have one of the top safety duos in the Big Ten. Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow
