The €351.6 million payment is the first as part of the country's €2.3 billion envelope

Estonia on Wednesday received the first 15% of its total €2.3 billion disbursement under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) loan for defence procurement.

Estonia is the sixth country to receive a first share of its loan allocation so far, following Poland, Cyprus, Lithuania, Croatia and Greece.

The programme was pitched last year by the European Commission as a way for member states to cheaply borrow money to fund their defence ramp-up.

The Baltic country received €351.6 million in loan payment to support the procurement of defence equipment, the Commission said in a statement.
