That distinction is more useful than it sounds, because a diminished capacity would be a loss, while a trained behavior can be retrained.How You Can Change This HabitBlocking apps and taking breaks from technology can be useful, but they work on the environment rather than on the reflex, which is why focus often falls apart again as soon as the restrictions come off.The more direct target is the minute that follows the urge to leave. Staying with a task through one snag, rather than through an entire afternoon, is what begins to weaken the link between small difficulty and immediate escape. It helps to treat the impulse as information about the task rather than as an instruction to act.Turning moments of departure into deliberate steps helps as well. Leroy’s work suggests that pausing to note where things stand before stepping away, sometimes called a “ready-to-resume” plan, leaves less residue behind.And rest is not the same thing as switching. Attention restoration theory distinguishes between activity that replenishes attention, like walking or looking out a window, and activity that only redirects it. The evidence is uneven across different mental abilities, but a 2025 meta-analysis published in Journal of Environmental Psychology found the clearest gains in attentional control, which is the part most worn down by a day of switching.
