Burkina Faso is deepening its economic relationship with Russia as the landlocked West African country seeks new sources of energy, technology, investment and trade beyond its traditional international partners.

The two countries are preparing for the first meeting of the Russia-Burkina Faso Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, scheduled to take place in Moscow on September 16.

The commission is expected to bring government officials and business representatives together to identify projects and commercial opportunities across agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals, civilian drones and investment.

The move marks a further institutionalisation of a relationship that has expanded rapidly in recent years.

Burkina Faso and Russia have already established agreements covering military-technical cooperation, education, aviation and peaceful nuclear energy, while the two countries have also been working to strengthen their commercial relationship.
