Environmental officials on Qeshm Island reported the spread of oil pollution from the island’s southern shores into the Hara (mangrove) forests near Naghasheh village.
Images published on social media depict sections of Qeshm’s coastline covered in oil slicks. The pollution was first observed on the evening of Sunday, August 2, 2026, extending across approximately one kilometer of Shib Draz’s Suza Beach before reaching the protected mangrove ecosystem.
Shahmorad Jafari, head of the Qeshm Department of Environment, stated that water and coastal sediment samples were collected following the discovery, though investigations into the origin of the oil slick remain ongoing.
Yousef Opera, head of the Qeshm Department of Natural Resources and Watershed Management, noted that authorities are currently assessing the extent of contamination within the Hara forests. Responsible agencies have initiated cleanup operations and containment measures to prevent further oil from entering the ecosystem.
The Prosecutor of Qeshm ordered the Ports and Maritime Organization, alongside municipal authorities, to clear the oil slicks from the coastline. To date, no casualties among marine life or structural damage to coastal infrastructure have been confirmed.
