In purely mathematical terms, around 41 companies filed for insolvency every day in Switzerland in the first half of 2026. That was almost 55 percent more than in the first six months of 2025. The sharp increase is also attributable to a change in the law. The only exception is the canton of Schwyz.

Since the beginning of 2025, public-sector creditors such as tax and social security authorities have been required to pursue outstanding claims more consistently through debt enforcement proceedings. This explains part of the increase, business information provider Dun & Bradstreet said on Wednesday.
Specifically, corporate insolvencies rose by almost 55 percent to 7,496 cases in the first six months of the year. This was the highest level since 1994, more than 30 years ago. If this pace continues, the full-year figure could reach a record of around 15,000 insolvencies, compared with just under 11,900 in the previous year.
