Members of a British family who for months avoided paying French motorway tolls by simply lifting the barrier at toll booths have been stopped in eastern France, police have said.
The operators of the A36 autoroute on Saturday alerted police to a suspected fraud at a toll booth near the city of Belfort, not far from the Swiss border.
At the next toll booth, “a person got out of one of the three cars, raised the barrier to let the vehicles through, before getting back in,” the local gendarmerie told AFP.
The occupants of the vehicles, British nationals belonging to the same family, were stopped by the gendarmes.
According to France 3 Franche-Comte television, they had been carrying out the same offence for several months.
