Trump secretly switched planes amid Iran threat, over 100 left onboard Air Force OneFollowing a Nato summit in Turkey, US President Donald Trump was secretly moved off Air Force One in an airport catering truck after US intelligence reportedly identified a credible Iranian plot to kill him last month, The Washington Post and The New York Times reported.More than 100 aides, officials and journalists remained aboard the aircraft and continued flying towards Britain, reportedly unaware of the threat that had prompted the covert security operation, as cited by the Guardian.Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut described the operation as “unprecedented and surreal” and “downright scary” in an interview with CNN.“There has to be a congressional briefing because it involves not just the safety of the president."“I want to know what precautions were taken to make sure that all of the passengers on that Air Force One, which was judged too dangerous for the president to fly on, what precautions were taken to keep the staff and reporters on that plane safe?” Blumenthal added.The White House had publicly announced that Trump would travel to Britain aboard Air Force One, although it would be the older aircraft rather than the newly refurbished Boeing 747 donated by Qatar. Trump initially boarded the presidential jet in full view of television cameras but was secretly transferred minutes later to an Air Force C-32A.The deception was elaborate enough that journalists travelling with the president, as well as some White House staff, believed Trump remained aboard Air Force One. Reporters were instructed to keep the window shades in the press cabin closed during the flight.The C-32A carrying Trump arrived at RAF Mildenhall in Britain at around 10.20 pm (local time), with the older Air Force One and the travelling press pool arriving minutes later. However, The New York Times and CBS News later reported that intelligence officials had raised concerns about a possible attack targeting Trump or his aircraft amid escalating tensions with Iran.During the Nato summit, the US military was also carrying out major strikes against Iran, heightening concerns about possible Iranian retaliation.
