Despite ending the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and firing its host, CBS apparently still wants to take home some hardware during this year’s Emmy Awards. On Tuesday, CBS launched a “For Your Consideration” Emmys campaign for the long-running variety program it canceled, citing low ratings and financial difficulties. The network posted an FYC video to the “Late Show’s” official YouTube page on Tuesday, which featured clips of Colbert alongside fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, Jon Stewart, David Letterman, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon and Andy Cohen. The announcement of Colbert’s termination came just days after the “Late Show” host rebuked the network’s decision to settle a lawsuit with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris. “As someone who has always been a proud employee of this network, I am offended. I don’t know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company,” Colbert said. CBS contended the show’s cancellation was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night” and was not related “in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.” At the time, CBS’s parent company, Paramount, needed Trump’s FCC to approve a multibillion-dollar merger with Skydance Media.Colbert’s final show aired on May 17 to an audience of 6.74 million and featured final guest Paul McCartney, who closed the night out with a performance of the Beatles’ song “Hello, Goodbye.” Also nominated in this year’s new Outstanding Variety Series category, which merged the old Outstanding Talk Series and Outstanding Scripted Variety Series categories, were “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “The Daily Show,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Saturday Night Live.” Kimmel, for his part, made clear who he was supporting for this year’s award when he erected a billboard in West Hollywood that read “I’m Voting For Stephen” alongside his own show’s Emmy campaign ad.
