Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White delivered a passionate statement about her reaction to DiJonai Carrington's flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham before the Fever faced the New York Liberty on Tuesday."Our players’ success, our players’ health and wellness, our players’ safety is always a top priority for me. One of the things I pride myself on is my relationships with players. For those who have anything to say about the play in the last game, I didn’t see the play in real time. I went straight to a press conference. I thought the play got called right. Thankfully, Sophie’s OK," White said, per the Fever. “Was it egregious? Absolutely. When you have a chance to watch that over and over and over on replay, you can see that. I didn’t have that in real time. I take personally any suggestions that I don’t 100% always have my players’ back. I ride with them 10 toes down all the time. All the time," White added. I don't think DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did. But it did happen, and I thought it was the right call... I don't oppose the hard foul, but I also don't think that she intentionally went for the neck." She got a lot of criticism from Fever fans and media about coming to Carrington's defense, given that DiJonai was the aggressor on her own player. White clearly saw the backlash she received and decided to respond in a very fiery way on Tuesday. Stephanie White's Fever Loyalty Should Not Come Into QuestionIn hindsight, White's initial reaction to the foul should've been taken with a grain of salt, given that she wasn't able to see and digest the replay while she was focused on coaching her team to a win.And regardless, White's loyalty to her Fever players should never be questioned. Take the passionate statement that Caitlin Clark made earlier in the year as an example, during another time when White was under fire from the Fever's fan base because of a bench interaction she had with Clark. Clark conveyed that she has, is, and will continue to "ride for" White because that's exactly what White has done for her. And several other Fever players have shared that same sentiment.
