New Delhi: India's net direct tax collections surged 23.09% year-on-year to ₹8.11 lakh crore as of August 10, underscoring the strength in the economy. The sharpest gains came from non-corporate taxes, which include payments by individuals, HUFs, firms and other entities as the collections rose to ₹5.07 lakh crore, from ₹4.11 lakh crore a year earlier.The last date for filing income-tax returns for salaried individuals for the financial year 2025-26 was July 31.Net corporate tax collections climbed to ₹2.70 lakh crore from ₹2.26 lakh crore, up 19.83% against the same period last year.Securities transaction tax also delivered a strong showing with collections rising to ₹33,823.74 crore from ₹22,354.31 crore, up 51%.Also read: Mines Act update proposes to curb states' tax powersThe collection is expected to surge further with August 31 being the deadline for filing ITRs for businesses and professionals who do not need a tax audit."Despite the global headwinds, tax collections remain buoyant. However, a better picture will emerge after the advance tax numbers for the second quarter due on September 15," a senior official said.Gross direct tax collections rose 19.75% to ₹9.55 lakh crore, compared with ₹7.97 lakh crore a year earlier. Refunds, meanwhile, increased just 3.79% to ₹1.43 lakh crore, helping net collections grow faster than the gross kitty.
