The Hadid family is a name familiar to many. For some, it is synonymous with fashion, but the family’s story reaches far beyond the runway. Behind some of the most recognizable names in fashion, business and design lies a family history shaped by displacement, entrepreneurship and enduring ties to the Arab world.
For the first time, Al Arabiya English was given exclusive access to the Hadid family estate in Rhodes, Greece, for an in-depth conversation with renowned designer and architect Mohamed Hadid, his daughter, designer and businesswoman Marielle Hadid, and his brother, entrepreneur and philanthropist Mahmoud Hadid.
Palestinian origins and connection with Greece
The Hadid family endured a long journey of displacement. They were forced to leave Nazareth, Palestine, in 1948 and sought refuge in Syria before moving on to Lebanon, Tunisia and Greece, and ultimately settling in Washington, DC.
Mahmoud was raised in a large family of eight children, alongside his brothers Mohamed and Majid and his five sisters, Raida Al Xasan, Maha Matar, Gada Harnden, Sana Hadid and Majida Hyatt. Their parents were Anwar and Kharia.
