Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Tuesday demanded that the state government provide fair compensation to people losing their lands, houses and commercial properties to the Rajiv Rahadari highway expansion project.Expressing support for the ongoing protest by affected property owners along the road-widening stretch in Karkhana, Secunderabad, he said that since residents were cooperating with the project, they deserved compensation that reflected the true market value of their properties.Mr. Rao said the compensation package should be revised on the lines of the enhanced compensation provided in the Thumkunta area. He noted that affected residents were making significant sacrifices for a public purpose and should be adequately compensated.Addressing a press conference later, Mr. Rao alleged that a majority of participants in a “protest organised by the Congress and the INDIA alliance in Delhi over the NEET paper leak were not students and nearly 90% of those present were outsiders”.He further alleged that “anti-national slogans”, including demands for “Azadi” for Kashmir, were raised during the protest. He also claimed that members of the LGBTQ community, who he said had no connection to the issue, had participated in the demonstration.Drawing a contrast with protests in Jharkhand, Mr. Rao claimed that students there were carrying out a “peaceful and disciplined agitation without resorting to abusive language”. He alleged that the Congress-JMM government was subjecting these students to repression despite the nature of their protest.Condemning what he described as “atrocities against students in Jharkhand”, Mr. Rao demanded that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the party apologise to the nation’s youth for their “hypocritical double standards” and address the students’ demands.‘Corrupt’ GovernmentIn a separate press conference, BJP Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy accused the Congress government of large-scale corruption, claiming that even party workers were dissatisfied with its functioning. He criticised the government for taking retired employees with three to four decades of service to court instead of settling their retirement benefits and alleged that court orders were being ignored. He also called on the ACB and Lokayukta to initiate suo motu inquiries into allegations of commission-seeking raised by retired employees and small contractors.
