India’s 300 most valuable family businesses are collectively worth $1.46 trillion (₹138 lakh crore), a figure that would rank as the world’s 18th-largest economy by GDP, surpassing countries such as Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and Poland, according to the third edition of the Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List released on August 11, 2026.The list expanded by 27.5 per cent since the 2024 edition, even as the Nifty 50 declined 1.1 per cent and the BSE Sensex fell 3.7 per cent over the same period. These businesses added an average of ₹4,076 crore in value every day over the past two years. Together, they employ 5.4 million people, generate ₹56 lakh crore in revenue and contribute ₹1.9 lakh crore in taxes, accounting for 17 per cent of India’s total corporate tax collections.”India’s family-owned enterprises continue to be a powerful force behind the country’s wealth creation, employment and long-term economic growth,” said Adrish Ghosh, Head of Barclays Private Bank India.The Ambani family retained the top spot for the third consecutive year, with a valuation of ₹25.8 lakh crore through Reliance Industries, despite an 8.5 per cent fall in value over the year. The Kumar Mangalam Birla family ranked second at ₹8.14 lakh crore, up 26 per cent, followed by the Jindal family at ₹8.02 lakh crore, up 40 per cent. Together, the top 10 families account for 51 per cent of the list’s total value.Family wealthThe inaugural first-generation family business list is led by the Adani family, valued at ₹19.6 lakh crore through Adani Power. The Sunil Bharti Mittal family follows at ₹12.1 lakh crore through Bharti Airtel, and the Dilip Shanghvi family ranks third at ₹4.55 lakh crore through Sun Pharmaceutical Industries. The pharmaceuticals sector dominates first-generation businesses with 22 companies, while Industrial Products leads the main list with 47 companies.”First-generation entrepreneurs are now firmly in the front rank. This wealth is spreading well beyond the traditional strongholds; cities such as Hyderabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Thrissur are seeing founders outpace their long-established family houses,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher, Hurun India.The Ahuja family of Shahi Exports recorded the highest three-year value growth at 352 per cent, while Garware Hi-Tech Films climbed 61 ranks, the largest jump on the list. The Nadar family registered the steepest decline, with the valuation falling 32 per cent amid weakness in the software and services sector. Meanwhile, the Anil Agarwal family posted the biggest annual gain in the top 10, rising 75 per cent following Vedanta’s demerger into five separately listed entities.Family leadershipMumbai continues to be India’s family business capital with 95 companies featured on the main list. Of the 300 families, 230 are worth $1 billion or more, representing 48 per cent increase than last year. Around 70 per cent of businesses are led by the second generation owners, while 71 companies are managed by professional CEOs. Eighteen companies are led by women, headed by Priya Agarwal Hebbar of Hindustan Zinc.”The fact that 79 of the top 300 families operate family offices, while 36 per cent of first-generation families have already established similar structures, underscores the increasing professionalisation of wealth management in India,” Ghosh added.Published on August 11, 2026
