ConocoPhillips has confirmed a leadership shake-up that will see chief financial officer and executive vice president of strategy and commercial, Andy O'Brien, step up as president and CEO from 1 September 2026.

He succeeds Ryan Lance, who moves into the role of executive chair of the board.

For an energy sector watching Alaska's Willow oil project closely, the timing of the handover puts fresh focus on execution.

Willow currently underpins close to 75% of the company's plan to add US$7bn in free cash flow by 2029, a target ConocoPhillips is now halfway through delivering.

Konnie Haynes-Welsh, who is currently the firm's Vice President of Finance and Controller, will replace Andy as CFO, while she will also become a Senior Vice President.
