Aug. 11 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump took aim at critics of Gianni Infantino, saying it would be a "terrible mistake" to replace the embattled FIFA president.
Trump addressed Infantino, who faces criticism for a proposed plan to sell commercial interests in the World Cup to private investors, on Monday on Truth Social. FIFA announced last month that the plan would not go forward after it received substantial opposition from worldwide soccer confederations.
Some of those critics have called on Infantino to resign. The FIFA president, who assumed the role in 2016, is expected to run for reelection in March.
"FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing president Gianni Infantino," Trump wrote on the social media platform.
