If Graham Mertz doesn't showcase that he's truly worthy of getting a roster spot his way, he might not be due for one. That's why these next few weeks of preseason are huge for him to capitalize on.Mertz is going to get a decent share of work throughout the season, especially in the first game. There are about five players at the position who feel well within reach of a roster spot if they perform well, and one of them is Brevin Jordan––who returns after missing back-to-back years with season-ending knee injuries.But Jordan hasn't exactly started off camp as well as he looked in OTAs and minicamp. He's recently been held out of practice due to injury, and it hasn't been revealed whether or not he'll be good for game time on Thursday. Braden Smith is back to full health and was signed onto the roster this offseason, intended to be the starter from the jump.Trent Brown, however, has caught his stride throughout the past few practices and is showing why he should be deserving of retaining that starting spot heading into Week 1. And he'll have a perfect opportunity to continue that momentum into preseason for the reps that he gets. That goes for their starting five-man group and their bench. But one player who hasn't certified his status on the 53-man roster is Jake Andrews, which is pretty eye-catching, considering he started every game for Houston at center in 2025.Andrews doesn't have the positional versatility compared to guys like Jarrett Patterson or Evan Brown, but he might be the best pure center. And he does have a good amount of experience on this Texans' offensive front at this point. That's not only because of the quad injury EJ Speed suffered to leave open Houston's LB3 spot, but also due to Jake Hansen's recent ankle injury that could take him out of the mix in practice for multiple weeks.Those injuries can clear a door wide open for Wade Woodard, the Texans' athletic freak of a linebacker who could be in perfect position to claim Houston's LB3 role, and put together a surprise impact on the defense as a day three rookie. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images | IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters ConnectOne pleasant surprise throughout the course of the Texans' camp has been undrafted free agent pickup Collin Wright; someone who's been praised by both DeMeco Ryans and Derek Stingley based on how he's attacked the offseason, and is someone who's slowly emerging as a dark horse to make the 53-man roster.A big night in a preseason game, though, could be what takes Wright over the edge. If he is able to haul in an interception in any of those three upcoming games––which is wildly possible considering the ball-hawking ability Wright has shown in camp––expect the coaches to continue talking about him and put him in clear consideration for a bigger role in the season.Kai Kroeger | PJul 31, 2026; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans punter Kai Kroeger (38) during training camp at Houston Methodist Training Center. That's good news, and potentially bad news for Kroeger. On one hand, Kroeger has the room to himself now, and every opportunity to prove himself as preseason arrives. On another, the Texans have over a month until the real season starts, and could look to replace the former New Orleans Saints punter with another free agent addition.
